In line with the national government’s vision of Rabies-Free Philippines by 2020 the municipality of San
Francisco together with the Provincial Government Unit of Agusan del Sur has been conducting a mass rabies vaccination in dogs, cats and even monkeys yearly.
For this year, it was conducted last May 2-5, 2017. Poblacion and highway barangays were prioritized during the mass vaccination since these barangays has a much higher dog population compared to interior barangays but nevertheless those barangays have not been included during the mass vaccination will be given a separate schedule for rabies vaccination.
During the activity, personnel from the Provincial Veterinary Office and the Municipal Agriculture Office conducted the rabies vaccination. Priority barangays were Barangay 3, 5, 1, 4, 2, Alegria, Hubang, karaos, Bayugan 2 and San Isidro. A total of 2,206 heads have been vaccinated of which 2,058 heads were dogs, 141 heads cats and 7 heads monkey. Moreover, there were 1,519 pet owners being served during the activity. These figures shows a positive response from the pet owners since a total 3,660 heads of dogs, cats and monkeys was the municipalities’ target for this year’s rabies vaccination.
On the other hand, part of the Dog and Rabies Control Program was the castration of dogs. It aims to control dog population. This was conducted last May 5, 2017 by the Provincial Veterinary Office personnel. A total of 22 heads of dogs were castrated with 18 pet owners being served.
This program is a collaborative effort of the Department of Agriculture RFO-XIII, Provincial Government of Agusan del Sur and the Local Government Unit of San Francisco, Agusan del Sur. The municipality allocates a sum of Php50, 000.00 yearly as a counterpart. This fund has been uploaded yearly to PGAS for the purchase of vaccines and other paraphernalia. Also, the DA allocates vaccines for the said program.
Combating rabies may be a difficult task but certainly not an impossible one. The fight to save human and animal lives and health can be done, especially with a strong commitment to cooperate among public and private partners and the community at all levels because happy, healthy dogs means happy, healthy people and communities.
